  1. Get Ready
  • You need:
    • A computer or smartphone with internet access.
    • An email address you check regularly.
    • Your phone (for a phone number).
    • A government-issued ID (like a driver’s license or passport).
    • A safe place to write down your password. (I recommend a Password Manager)
  1. Go to the IRS Website or ID.me
  1. Start Creating Your Account
  • On the IRS website:
    • Click on “Sign in or create account”.
  • On the next page:
    • Click “Sign in with me and then “Create an ID.me account”
  • Fill in your email address:
    • Type your email carefully (check for typos).
  • Create a password:
    • Make a strong password (use letters, numbers, and symbols).
    • Write down your password in a safe place. (I recommend a Password Manager)
  • Click “Create account” or “Sign up”.
  1. Check Your Email
  • Open your email inbox.
  • Look for an email from me.
  • Click the link in the email or enter the code they send you to confirm your email.
  1. Set Up Your Profile
  1. Verify Your Identity
  • Have your government ID ready (driver’s license or passport).
  • Follow the instructions to upload a picture of your ID.
  • Take a selfie with your phone or webcam or choose to do a video call with an me agent if you need help.
  • Follow all the steps until the website says your identity is verified.
  1. Link Your Account to the IRS (if needed)
  • After your identity is verified, you may be asked to link your me account to the IRS.
  • Follow the prompts and enter any extra info (like your Social Security number) if asked.
  • Click “Link Account” or “Continue” when done.
  1. You’re Done!
  • Now you can sign in to IRS services using your me account.
  • You can check your refund, make payments, get tax transcripts, and more.
